How to get word of mouth marketing for your nonprofit

You want people to SPREAD the word about you organically right? Not asking or begging would be nice ay?

Here are two ways to make that happen.

1️. Overdeliver.

If you want people to talk about you, you need to give them something worth talking about. We share experiences that are much better or worse than we expect - just look at reviews of literally ANYTHING. When designing programs, volunteer experiences, donor communication, ask yourself how can I overdeliver and surprise and delight my community?

You need to design the experience from the onset in a way that it begs to be shared. It doesn’t have to be over the top either. Small, personal, & intentional details can make a big impression.

2️.  Create content that makes THEM look good.

We all love to share posts that make us look good. We share content that makes us look more educated, kind, generous, and above average. When you create content that will make your audience look good when they share, you’re giving them a compelling reason to do it.

Think about how widely social justice posts were shared this past year. Of course, people care deeply about the cause BUT that’s not the only reason they shared. They had an added benefit that the posts they shared were designed in a way that made THEM look good.

One last thing, pay attention to the people that are already spreading the word (on & offline) even if it’s not as many or as frequent as you hope. What do they all have in common, what are they saying? That will give you a clue of what you can amplify!
