The worst thing you can say to a nonprofit
I know because it happened to me.
In my first few weeks as a program director, I met a family that really NEEDED our services but literally had no idea we existed. When they finally met us they were beyond grateful but also confused as to why they weren’t able to benefit from the organization sooner.
So there I was, brand new to the organization, and being asked,
“Why are you guys this best-kept secret?”
If you’re not actively spreading the word about your organization, you’re choosing to keep it a secret. And that means that people who need your service, want to volunteer, or want to donate simply can’t.
What did I do?
I let that question fuel me to market the organization in a way that those that needed us knew we existed and knew why they should care and join.
Thankfully not only did I never got that question again & in a few short months, we became one of the most well-known organizations in the city.
Marketing is not about you, it's about the ppl you help and the people that want to help you do it.
Here’s a couple of ideas to go from best-kept secret to simply be known as the best:)
-> Reach out to local influencers and pitch a collab. Do your research and suggest an idea that would add real value and make sense for the influencer’s community.
-> Connect with bloggers in your niche and pitch a seasonal story so the blogger has a reason to go for it right away.
-> Plan shareable content. What type of content would your community feel compelled to share? Be intentional and create 1-2 posts a month that is practically bingeable for your audience.
